Buy the tractor around the trailer it will actually pull. Engine power alone does not establish compatibility: the combination, coupling geometry, ratings and brake or electrical interfaces all need to be identified.
Start with the trailer sheet and loading pattern.
Review kingpin, height, ratings and clearances.
Confirm loading, braking, controls and documents.
Begin with the trailer specification
Send the existing or proposed trailer model, drawing, axle arrangement, empty and loaded mass, kingpin information and landing-gear details. Name the intended cargo and normal loading pattern. A container trailer, a refrigerated semi-trailer and a tipping semi-trailer can impose different geometry and equipment requirements.
Give the destination and intended route, including gradients and road surface. Distinguish normal road operations from site work. If the buyer uses several trailers, list each relevant version rather than assuming that one tractor configuration will suit the entire fleet.
Review the combination and axle loading
Ask for the tractor’s mass and rating information, the proposed combination limits and the trailer’s imposed load at the coupling. The complete combination must be assessed with the cargo distribution, tractor axle loads and trailer axle loads identified. A high trailer gross figure does not mean the tractor can carry every imposed load.
Use the relevant manufacturer documentation and destination limits for the actual combination. Ask the supplier to identify the basis of each mass figure. Keep the approved loading and coupling schedule with the quotation so that a later change in trailer or wheelbase triggers a new review.
Specify the fifth wheel and kingpin
Confirm the coupling manufacturer and model, kingpin size, imposed-load rating, D-value, mounting arrangement and maintenance requirements. Ask the vehicle and coupling suppliers to assess the actual use. These are identification and engineering-review items, not numbers to select independently from a catalogue.
JOST’s coupling guidance distinguishes imposed load from D-value and calls for additional review where uneven surfaces or site work add dynamic demands. A physically fitting kingpin does not by itself establish a suitable coupling assembly.
Check height, clearance and working interfaces
Request the proposed fifth-wheel mounting height on a stated vehicle/load basis and compare it with the trailer geometry. Include cab-to-trailer clearance, articulation, landing-gear access and the effect of the selected mounting position. Use drawings and supplier confirmation rather than a photograph alone.
JOST’s mounting reference addresses mounting plates and height choices and requires the relevant coupling and vehicle mounting instructions. Also identify the brake system and connections, electrical voltage and connectors, ABS/EBS interfaces where applicable, and any trailer hydraulic or power requirements.
Turn the matching review into a defined order
Record the exact tractor model, engine, transmission, final drive, tyres, wheelbase and factory steering side. Auto From China accepts LHD and RHD new-vehicle enquiries through its manufacturer relationships; availability and the destination build are confirmed for the actual model and quantity.
Agree which party supplies the coupling, adapters, brake/electrical connections and trailer equipment. Request inspection records, manuals, spare-parts identification and the service scope for each component. Acceptance should demonstrate the agreed interfaces under the manufacturers’ procedures, with the tractor and trailer identities recorded together.
Put these items in the enquiry
| Matching item | Information required |
|---|---|
| Trailer | Model, drawing, axle arrangement, cargo and loading pattern |
| Mass | Tractor/trailer ratings, coupling imposed load and axle distribution |
| Coupling | Fifth-wheel and kingpin models, ratings, mounting and service requirements |
| Geometry | Mounting height basis, clearances, articulation and landing-gear access |
| Interfaces | Braking, ABS/EBS where applicable, electrical and hydraulic connections |
| Acceptance | Both identities, interface demonstration, documents and support scope |
Relevant product briefs
Use these live briefs to prepare a configuration enquiry. The photographs and manufacturer references do not establish current stock or a confirmed export offer.

Questions buyers ask
Is tractor engine power enough to select a trailer?
No. Start with the intended combination, cargo, operating mass and route. Request the tractor and trailer manufacturers’ matching review for coupling, clearance, braking and permitted loads.
Which coupling dimensions must be recorded?
Identify the fifth wheel and kingpin specification, coupling height, trailer front geometry and available articulation clearance. Use drawings for the offered combination rather than a photograph of similar equipment.
What should the electrical and air connection schedule include?
List connectors, line arrangement, operating requirements and the applicable trailer equipment. Ask the supplier to confirm compatibility and include any required accessories in the quotation.
How should axle loads be compared?
Request loading assumptions and load distribution for the complete combination. Include payload position, fifth-wheel position and the relevant tractor and trailer limits.
What if the trailer is sourced separately?
Give both suppliers the same identified equipment drawings and configuration schedule. Assign responsibility for the matching review and acceptance checks before either order is placed.
What handover documents are useful?
Request the actual model identities, combination drawings, coupling and braking information, operation manuals, inspection scope and service responsibilities. Record outstanding destination requirements separately.
Send the destination, quantity and the operating details above. We will review the identified manufacturer version and quotation scope.
