Chinese Commercial Vehicles: Payload and Body Selection Before You Order

A useful commercial-vehicle enquiry starts with the goods and the route. Two trucks with similar cargo boxes can have different permitted masses, axle limits, wheelbases and braking systems. A larger body does not automatically provide more usable payload.

Prepare these details before requesting a quote

Decision Information to prepare
Cargo and route Normal / maximum load, goods dimensions, loading method, daily distance and gradients
Complete vehicle Chassis code, body builder, finished mass, axle limits and usable body dimensions
Export version Factory LHD / RHD, engine, gearbox, offered configuration and destination documents
Order scope Equipment, inspection evidence, spares, warranty, packing and freight

1. Describe the real load

Give the normal and maximum cargo mass, dimensions, density and loading method. State whether goods move in pallets, crates, loose materials or service equipment. Identify whether a tail lift, crane, shelving or refrigeration system is required. Those items add mass and can change how load is distributed.

Include the route: stop frequency, daily mileage, gradients, road surface, loading-bay access and any height or width constraints. This brief is more useful than requesting the biggest box or the highest horsepower alone.

2. Separate chassis and finished vehicle

A chassis-cab quotation normally does not include the finished body. Ask which manufacturer builds the chassis, who builds the body, and whether the stated kerb mass is for a bare chassis or the completed vehicle. Compare the same scope in every offer.

A practical mass check begins with permitted gross vehicle weight minus the applicable ready-to-operate vehicle mass. Occupants, tools and cargo must fit within the remaining allowance, while each axle stays within its own limit. Confirm the manufacturer’s mass definitions and the destination rules rather than treating this subtraction as a registration certificate.

Illustrative calculation: if an agreed gross limit is 7,500 kg and the ready-to-operate vehicle with its specified body and equipment is 4,400 kg, 3,100 kg remains for occupants and load on that measurement basis. This is an example, not a specification for an offered truck. Axle distribution may reduce usable cargo further.

3. Check usable dimensions and access

For vans, compare floor length, width between wheel arches, clear internal height and door openings. For box trucks, identify internal rather than exterior dimensions. For drop-side vehicles, define platform and sideboard dimensions. For dump trucks, specify material density, body steel, tailgate and hoist together.

Loading access matters. Pallet positions, forklift entry, a tail lift or side loading can change the body layout, wheelbase and axle loading. Ask for a finished-body drawing when the task depends on precise clearance.

4. Select the exact export version

Factory LHD and RHD availability must be checked for the chosen model, engine, body and destination. Auto From China uses its manufacturer relationships to review both steering-side enquiries for new vehicles. A domestic-market photograph or a family-level brochure does not confirm a specific export build.

Use the complete chassis/model code in the offer. Engine, transmission, brakes, tyres, emissions package and body mounting requirements should refer to that code. JAC’s Sunray family page, for example, covers several body and powertrain directions; those alternatives should not be combined into one universal specification.

5. Make the quotation comparable

Request separate lines for chassis, body, optional equipment, initial spares, inspection, packing and freight. Identify the trade terms and which destination charges remain with the buyer. Agree the acceptance evidence and warranty responsibilities before ordering.

Ask for the available model sheet, vehicle/body identity, mass and axle evidence, service manual and export documents. The importer should verify that the exact offered configuration and documents support the intended use in the destination.

Send a complete operating brief

Send the destination and port, quantity, LHD/RHD requirement, typical and maximum load, cargo dimensions, route and preferred body. We can then discuss a configuration-based offer with the manufacturer.

Questions buyers ask

Is bare-chassis capacity the same as finished vehicle payload?

No. Body, working equipment and options change the ready-to-operate mass. Request the finished configuration and the gross, axle and tyre limits used for the comparison.

Which cargo information is essential?

Provide normal and maximum mass, dimensions, density where relevant, loading pattern and securing requirements. Include the largest item and any permanent fit-out.

Why ask for a body drawing?

A drawing identifies usable dimensions, doors, loading height, equipment and clearance. It lets the buyer compare the actual body scope rather than an exterior photograph.

What if two offers use different mass assumptions?

Ask both suppliers to state their fuel, occupants, body and options assumptions. Compare the complete offered vehicles on the same operating brief and flag unexplained differences.

Should steering side be confirmed separately?

Yes. State factory LHD or RHD together with the destination, model and quantity. The supplied version and documentation must be confirmed for that enquiry.

What closes the quotation review?

Use one schedule covering chassis, body, usable dimensions, loading basis, equipment, documents and exclusions. Record unresolved questions and require confirmation before an order commitment.
