Ocean Shipping a Used EV from China: 2026 Booking Evidence Pack

Reviewed 9 October 2026. Booking a used electric car for ocean transport requires more than dimensions and a freight price. The forwarder needs the exact propulsion category, vehicle condition and supporting evidence, while the carrier decides acceptance for the proposed route and sailing. This guide gives a booking-file structure for an EV purchase from China.

Use the current shipping rules and the correct vehicle category

IMO states that the IMDG Code 2024 edition, including amendment 42-24, became mandatory on 1 January 2026.[1] The amendment distinguishes battery-only vehicles powered by lithium-ion, lithium-metal or sodium-ion batteries through the relevant entries, including UN 3556 for lithium-ion battery-powered vehicles. Its provisions also address vehicles containing an internal-combustion engine separately.[2]

Give the qualified dangerous-goods provider the complete factory and battery record. Do not assign one classification to every car described in a listing as “electric” or “new energy”. A BEV, PHEV, EREV and conventional hybrid need the actual propulsion system reviewed. Have the provider confirm the applicable entry, provisions, transport mode and documents for the shipment.

Carrier acceptance is an additional decision

Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s current used alternative-fuel instructions require an onboard-diagnostic report addressing the high-voltage battery and vehicle electrical system, plus condition photographs. Its used lithium-ion BEV entry states a restriction with an exception after a special safety inspection and the required load-port approvals.[3] An ordinary seller inspection should not be assumed to satisfy that exception.

The carrier also publishes state-of-charge instructions and rejects loading vehicles with damaged or defective lithium batteries.[4][5] These are examples from a named operator’s current instructions. Ask the selected operator for its dated acceptance decision and charge requirements; they are not a universal numerical rule for every shipping line.

Build the booking file before requesting a sailing

File section What the booking enquiry should identify
Identity VIN, manufacturer, factory model, grade, production date and registration/condition category.
Propulsion and battery BEV/PHEV/EREV/HEV description, installed battery information and engine/fuel details where applicable.
Dimensions and operation Vehicle dimensions, weight, driveability, ground clearance and agreed handling instructions.
Condition evidence Diagnostic report, dated photographs, damage/repair disclosures and provider identity.
Acceptance Carrier, route, proposed sailing, required inspections, approvals and remaining conditions.
Documents and parties Exporter, shipper, consignee, invoice, customs documents and responsible local agents.
Charge and handover Carrier-required charge range, verification record, keys and allowed onboard accessories.

The table is a recommended enquiry structure. The selected carrier and qualified provider determine the complete required file. Mark missing records clearly so the booking team can distinguish a quotation request from a vehicle ready for acceptance.

RoRo and container offers need separate review

RoRo can suit an operational vehicle accepted by the service, while a container proposal adds packing, securing, terminal and equipment questions. A container is not an automatic way to avoid dangerous-goods controls or a carrier restriction. Ask the forwarder to assess the actual vehicle, packaging method and shipping line together.

Use our RoRo versus container comparison for the transport options, then define the booking evidence and handling scope. Confirm who supplies the packing plan, who supervises loading and how the condition record is preserved. Put those services in the quotation rather than assuming they are included in the freight line.

Keep inspection evidence distinct from battery-health claims

An error-free diagnostic report addresses the systems and information available to that provider at that time. It is not a promise that the battery is new or a complete capacity measurement. A dashboard charge percentage reports state of charge, not automatically state of health. Ask for the method, date, vehicle identity and limits of any battery-health claim.

For the purchase condition review, read the used-EV battery health and SOH checklist. For shipping, use the carrier’s required report format and approval process. Keep both records in the VIN file, with their different purposes stated clearly.

Reconcile export, booking and destination files

Review the 2026 China used-car export document checklist where the vehicle’s registration history makes it relevant. Then use the country import guide for destination eligibility and registration evidence. A carrier’s acceptance does not settle customs eligibility, and a China export document does not settle ocean acceptance.

  1. Approve the exact vehicle and destination import route.
  2. Collect condition, diagnostic and battery/propulsion evidence.
  3. Obtain the carrier’s acceptance for the chosen service and complete its conditions.
  4. Reconcile the VIN, parties and descriptions across invoice, export and transport records.
  5. Record the final vehicle condition and required charge before terminal handover.
  6. Keep the discharge and destination inspection responsibilities with the receiving agent.

If a car is substituted, repaired or moved to a different sailing, ask the responsible providers which acceptance records need renewal. Preserve the previous decision and its scope instead of assuming it transfers unchanged.

Request a used-EV shipping and sourcing review

Send the VIN if available, model, condition, propulsion type, quantity, country and port. Include the available diagnostic and condition records and disclose missing evidence.
