A used EV’s battery deserves its own evidence record. Odometer, displayed range and an exterior photograph answer different questions from a dated battery assessment. Before buying a used Chinese electric car, agree which information the supplier can provide and what each test can actually establish.
Identify the installed battery and its ownership
Request VIN, production date, model year, exact trim and installed battery specification. Ask whether the pack has been replaced or upgraded and obtain available supporting records. Reconcile any battery document with the car and date being assessed.
For a NIO ET5 Touring 100 kWh enquiry or EC6 100 kWh enquiry, clarify purchased-battery ownership and any separate subscription or swap arrangement. Do not assume that an advertised battery size establishes ownership or transferable service overseas.
Ask what the SOH figure measures
If a state-of-health value is available, ask who produced it, which tool or manufacturer method was used, the test date and the conditions. Keep the full report rather than only a cropped percentage. A value without its measurement basis is difficult to compare.
Treat SOH, fault diagnostics, usable-energy evidence and displayed range as separate records. They may support an assessment together, but one number should not be presented as a guarantee of future lifespan or every driving condition.
| Evidence | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Battery identity | Does the report identify this VIN and installed pack? |
| SOH or assessment | What method, tool, date and conditions produced the value? |
| Diagnostics | Which systems were checked and were findings recorded? |
| Charging | Which AC or DC equipment was used and what happened? |
| Physical condition | Was the battery housing and relevant underside condition reviewed? |
| History | What records exist for repairs, replacement, flood or collision concerns? |
Agree a charging demonstration and diagnostics
Ask for the charging checks included in the inspection scope. Record the vehicle, equipment, starting and ending charge, duration and any warnings or interruptions. If both AC and DC operation matter, identify both checks separately.
A single successful charge does not establish every public-network combination. Confirm overseas compatibility as a separate task. If a diagnostic or warning issue is found, agree the resolution and whether a repeat check is needed before shipment.
Review history and physical condition together
Request available maintenance and repair records, battery replacement evidence and documented condition. Ask the inspector to record relevant underside or housing observations within the agreed scope. Identify any collision, water exposure or storage concern that needs a specialist assessment.
A clean exterior and low odometer cannot settle every battery question. Equally, a general statement about typical EV battery life cannot establish the condition of an individual car. Keep uncertainty attached to the actual evidence rather than converting it into an unsupported assurance.
Keep displayed range separate from battery condition
Displayed distance can depend on charge level and the vehicle’s estimate. If a driving demonstration is provided, retain route, load, weather, starting and ending charge and recorded distance. Review it with the battery and configuration data.
Use the range-comparison guide to distinguish test-cycle references from observed use. A short demonstration may answer a practical question, but it should not be labelled a certified full-range or lifetime test.
Check shipping acceptance and support before buying
Provide the forwarder with the used condition and energy type and obtain acceptance for the exact booking. Ask the destination service provider which diagnostics, repair and replacement support they can offer for this model. Keep the scope and responsibility written.
Australian government EV-buying guidance includes battery checks among used-car considerations. For a China-sourced order, turn those considerations into the evidence you can actually obtain. Do not invent a universal acceptable SOH threshold; agree the buyer’s requirement and how it will be measured.
Frequently asked questions
Can the displayed range prove battery health?
It is one vehicle estimate at a particular state of charge. Ask for battery identity, the assessment method, diagnostics and agreed charging evidence separately.
Is one SOH percentage comparable across every model?
Request the method and conditions before comparing values. Different reports may use different definitions or measurement arrangements.
What if no detailed battery report is available?
Record the limitation, identify the checks that can be performed and decide using the actual evidence. Do not replace missing data with an invented health assurance.
Does a battery-swap model automatically include overseas swaps?
Ask about ownership, accounts and destination service availability. A China network or subscription reference is not proof of overseas coverage.

To turn this comparison into an acceptance record, use the China’s 180-day used-car export document checklist. For a recently registered vehicle sold through the used-car export route, review the manufacturer confirmation and VIN-matched document requirement before payment.
