The useful shipping choice starts with an accepted vehicle and a workable route. RoRo and container offers can involve different loading methods, service boundaries and cargo conditions. Compare the complete booking scope before choosing from the freight price alone.
How the loading methods differ
Wallenius Wilhelmsen describes RoRo as cargo rolling on and off a vessel, with vehicle movement through ramps. A container shipment instead requires a suitable loading, securing and unloading plan for the vehicle inside the container. Ask the operator to describe those operations for the actual car.
Neither label establishes a universal door-to-door service. Identify the origin handover point, destination release point, inland movements and any handling that falls outside the ocean offer. A car’s ground clearance, dimensions, condition and accessories matter to the operational plan.
| Question | RoRo offer | Container offer |
|---|---|---|
| Cargo acceptance | Confirm this vehicle, energy type and condition | Confirm carrier acceptance and container loading plan |
| Route | Named ports and booking-specific service | Named ports, container availability and booking basis |
| Vehicle handling | Terminal movement and loading scope | Loading, securing, documentation and unloading scope |
| Extras | Obtain permission for every separately carried item | Obtain permission and an approved packing plan |
| Total cost | Freight plus identified terminal and local charges | Freight plus loading, securing, unloading and local charges |
Check EV and plug-in hybrid acceptance first
Carrier requirements can distinguish new, used, damaged and alternative-fuel vehicles. One carrier’s published instructions contain separate used-BEV restrictions and battery preparation rules. That is evidence that an EV booking needs an exact acceptance check, not a promise that a mode is available for every electric car.
Provide the actual condition, energy type and requested route. Ask which documents, diagnostic evidence or preparation the booking requires and obtain the response in writing. Follow the operator’s current instructions for that cargo; do not copy a state-of-charge limit from an unrelated carrier or older shipment.
Use actual dimensions and vehicle condition
A MAXUS electric pickup and a compact MG4 hatchback answer different space and handling requirements. Give the forwarder the exact length, width, height, weight and any fitted accessories. Ask how those figures affect the quote and loading plan.
Photograph exterior condition, underside clearance where appropriate, keys and included items at handover. Specify whether the car can move under its own power and identify any defect or unusual condition. Do not leave an operator to discover a loading issue at the terminal.
Ask what the freight quote excludes
Request the origin and destination charges, inland movement, loading or securing work, insurance scope and potential time-based charges as separate lines. Identify the currency, quote validity and assumptions. Container and RoRo totals should be compared using the same handover points.
Use the import-cost worksheet to record unknown items. If a route or mode changes, request an updated scope rather than adding a new freight amount to an old destination estimate. Keep the commercial risk allocation and cargo insurance record with the booking.
Prepare an arrival and discrepancy process
Ask who receives and releases the vehicle, which records are required, and who handles local movement. Review the arrival condition before putting the car into service. Preserve dated images and the shipment record if a discrepancy appears.
Confirm the operator’s reporting and claims procedure before shipment, including the responsible contacts. This is more useful than assuming that either a sealed container or a RoRo terminal automatically establishes that every vehicle item was unchanged during the journey.
Frequently asked questions
Is RoRo always cheaper than a container?
There is no universal answer. Compare current route-specific offers, actual dimensions and all included handling and destination services.
Can every used EV travel by RoRo?
Acceptance depends on the operator, booking, condition and current cargo rules. Obtain written acceptance of the specific vehicle before planning shipment.
Can personal items be left inside the vehicle?
Ask the carrier or forwarder for explicit permission and packing instructions. Do not assume that either shipping mode allows extra cargo inside a car.
Which mode best suits a single car?
Request accepted offers for the available route and compare cost, handling, timing assumptions and destination scope. The cargo and booking determine the useful choice.

To turn this comparison into an acceptance record, use the used-EV ocean-booking evidence pack. Agree the carrier’s acceptance evidence and the preparation records for the actual vehicle and route before reserving the shipment.
