A distributor can describe a delivery route more accurately than a truck model. That is an advantage when buying from China: the same badge may cover several wheelbases, powertrains and body arrangements. Start the enquiry with a representative working day so the supplier has to explain how the proposed configuration completes the job, rather than simply attaching a catalogue.
Define the job before the model
Before you approve the quotation: Request a dated route sheet, dimensioned body layout and an exception list against the same operating brief. Resolve the tightest entrance and heaviest departure load before accepting a model recommendation.

Where the specification can go wrong
Separate the heaviest load from the most difficult stop. The busiest day may determine capacity, while a low canopy, narrow market entrance or steep unloading yard eliminates an otherwise attractive vehicle. Record both cases. Include the empty return, rejected goods and reusable packaging; a route does not end when the first full load leaves the depot.
Then distinguish a hard constraint from a preference. A measured entrance height is a constraint. A preferred cab colour is an option. Send the same route sheet to each supplier and require an exception column. A blank answer is an unresolved item, not an implied confirmation. Ask for the exact chassis and completed-body specification behind any proposed model.
Compare the working alternatives
| Decision | Alternative A | Alternative B | Buyer’s evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Load basis | Largest single delivery | Total cargo leaving depot | Weights, package sizes and loading sequence |
| Route basis | Typical weekday | Peak-season working day | Distance, stops, waiting and return load |
| Access basis | Road width only | Doors, turns and overhead clearance | Measured tightest receiving point |
| Powertrain basis | Advertised consumption | Loaded route with auxiliary demand | A comparable trial or documented duty assumption |
| Support basis | Warranty duration | Practical service and parts route | Responsible company and response process |
A worked buying example
Illustrative assumptions; not a supplier quotation, an approved design or a machine rating.
Suppose a route has 12 stops requiring 10 minutes each, 100 km of travel at an assumed average 40 km/h, and 45 minutes of depot work. Delivery time is 2 hours, driving 2.5 hours and depot work 0.75 hour: 5.25 hours before unplanned queues. An eight-hour shift therefore leaves 2.75 hours of scheduling allowance. These are planning assumptions, not an advertised truck productivity figure. Changing the stop time can matter more than changing the engine.
Put the decision in the purchase order
Attach the route sheet to the quotation and record which load case the vehicle is intended to carry. Ask the supplier to return a dimensioned body layout, payload calculation and exceptions list against it. If the operator has not yet measured a receiving yard, leave that decision open rather than approving the truck on a photograph. A supplier proposal becomes comparable when its assumptions are visible, including destination approval and factory steering configuration.
Questions to send with the enquiry
- What are the heaviest departure load and largest individual package?
- Which receiving point sets the minimum clearance or turning requirement?
- What working time is available for charging, refuelling and service?
- Which route assumptions has the proposed chassis not yet been checked against?
Send Auto From China your enquiry, including your destination, operating brief and the answers above. We can work with manufacturers to compare the relevant vehicle or machinery configuration and identify the items that still need written confirmation.
