Reviewed 9 October 2026. A useful China EV quotation starts with an exact vehicle and ends with a named delivery point. For an African importer, the gap between those two points includes export documents, transport, destination assessment, port release and the work needed to put the car into service. This guide gives a purchasing worksheet; it does not assign one tax rate to Africa.
Start with a specification that can be priced
Write the manufacturer, model family, original factory grade, production year, powertrain, battery specification and steering layout on the enquiry. Add quantity, condition, colour priorities and the destination country and port. A quotation for a battery-electric version cannot be used to budget its plug-in hybrid or range-extender counterpart without a new assessment.
Before a VIN is allocated, mark the offer as a model-level estimate. After allocation, replace the provisional record with the actual VIN and factory evidence. Record which decisions still depend on inspection or approval. This keeps an attractive headline price from being treated as a complete purchase commitment.
Use the Incoterm and named place together
ICC’s Incoterms® 2020 guidance distinguishes delivery, risk transfer and transport costs. It points buyers toward FCA for container or multimodal handover and FOB where delivery is on board the vessel. Under CIF, the seller arranges freight and the specified minimum insurance obligation, while transport risk transfers at shipment. CIF is not a promise of local registration or delivery to the buyer’s premises.[1]
Ask for the rule, its version and the full named place in writing. “China port” or “CIF Africa” leaves essential information missing. Keep the insurance document, covered journey, insured value and claims contact with the quotation. If inland delivery is included, identify its endpoint and the responsible party instead of assuming it follows automatically from ocean freight.
A landed-cost worksheet that exposes missing items
| Cost line | What to record | Evidence owner |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle | Exact grade or VIN; currency; included options; offer expiry | Supplier |
| China preparation | Inspection, documents, inland movement and terminal scope | Exporter / appointed service provider |
| International transport | Route, mode, accepted vehicle category and freight validity | Carrier / forwarder |
| Cargo insurance | Scope, value, deductible and claim procedure | Insurer / arranging party |
| Destination assessment | Classification, valuation basis, duties, taxes and documented relief | Destination clearing agent |
| Release and delivery | Port charges, agent fees, storage assumptions and inland endpoint | Destination agent / transporter |
| Operational handover | Approval, registration, insurance, charging and initial service | Importer / local providers |
For every line, add a status: confirmed, estimate, excluded or not yet assessed. Keep the assessment date and exchange-rate basis visible. Do not silently put a zero beside an unknown expense. When a supplier bundles several lines, ask which services the bundle covers so you can compare it with another offer.
Keep country rules with the vehicle record
A Kenyan enquiry illustrates why country-specific preparation matters. KRA’s vehicle guidance identifies right-hand-drive and used-vehicle eligibility conditions and the required import documents. Its 2026 implementation guidance also adds an export-country declaration record from 1 September 2026.[2][3] These are Kenya references, not a checklist that can be copied unchanged into another destination.
Read the separate guides for Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa, or use the 50-market country directory. Give the chosen destination agent the exact factory record and ask for the applicable approval and cost assessment. Confirm any exemption against its conditions and supporting document, rather than applying an “EV tax free” assumption.
Compare two offers at the same scope
Place offers A and B beside the same specification and endpoint. First reconcile the vehicle grade and condition. Then compare the named delivery place, shipping acceptance, inspection evidence, insurance and exclusions. If A ends at the Chinese terminal and B includes ocean freight, add the missing transport scope before calculating a saving.
Separate fixed per-shipment costs from costs assessed per vehicle when buying several cars. State how shared charges will be allocated. Keep a sensitivity column for exchange rates or freight changes, using your own current figures. This is more useful than an invented universal freight price or a single blended tax percentage.
Set review points before purchase and loading
- Approve the destination eligibility and specification before accepting the commercial offer.
- Match the allocated VIN and inspection report to that specification.
- Reconcile exporter, invoice, consignee and transport-document details.
- Obtain the carrier’s acceptance and the agent’s updated assessment.
- Approve the final cost scope and delivery responsibilities before loading.
If a grade, VIN or destination changes, reopen the affected cost and approval lines. Preserve the prior estimate as a version instead of overwriting its assumptions. Your supplier, forwarder and local agent should be able to see which record is current.
Request a quotation with the worksheet completed
Send the model, quantity, new or used requirement, factory steering specification, country and port. Include the local agent’s evidence list and identify the missing cost lines. Auto From China can coordinate a defined inspection scope and shipping scope for the enquiry. For the basic trade-term comparison, read our FOB, CIF and quotation checklist.
