Reviewed 9 October 2026. A Chinese vehicle can have a valid invoice and export file without having an established route to local road registration. Buyers should keep customs clearance, vehicle approval, registration and operational support as separate decisions. This is especially useful when comparing a China domestic specification with an official export-market version.
Four decisions belong in the purchase file
| Decision | Question it answers | Evidence to obtain |
|---|---|---|
| Import and customs | Can this vehicle enter under the intended procedure, and how is it assessed? | Importer eligibility, classification, valuation and customs-document requirements. |
| Vehicle approval | Does the exact specification have an accepted compliance route? | Applicable approval, technical evidence, inspections and conditions. |
| Registration | What is required to register and use it on local roads? | Registration checklist, identity, tax, insurance and inspection evidence. |
| Operational support | Can the buyer charge, maintain and use its functions as intended? | Charging plan, service scope, software access, parts and warranty terms. |
This table is a recommended review method. Assign each decision to the relevant destination professional or authority. A supplier’s export experience can help coordinate documents, but it does not replace the approval or registration authority’s decision.
Match the evidence to the original market specification
Record the original factory model designation and grade, VIN, production date, powertrain, steering layout, seats and installed charging interfaces. Identify the market for which the car was built. A familiar model-family name is not enough to show that its domestic and export versions share approval evidence.
Ask whether the supplied certificate or report covers that exact configuration and vehicle category. Keep the issuer, report number, scope and conditions beside the factory record. If a document belongs to another version, ask the local provider what further evidence or work is required before agreeing to the purchase.
Australia demonstrates why the route comes before shipping
Australia’s infrastructure department explains its road-vehicle import approval pathways and says approval is required before importation. Its eight-step guide puts approval before arranging shipment. The RAV records vehicles approved for provision to the Australian market; a concessional route has defined eligibility criteria rather than being available for every car.[1][2]
For an Australian enquiry, use the dedicated Australia guide and have the appropriate provider identify the route for the actual vehicle. Do not use a freight booking, a domestic China approval or a model’s appearance in another database as a substitute for the required approval.
The United Kingdom has its own evidence and inspection route
UK guidance describes individual vehicle approval, distinguishes basic and normal IVA, and explains the use of evidence or model reports for the relevant specification. It also warns that vehicles classed as seriously damaged cannot be registered or taxed with DVLA.[3] These rules do not create an automatic approval for a China-spec EV.
Read the United Kingdom guide, then ask the qualified local provider which application and evidence apply. Keep approval and DVLA registration stages distinct, including the required identity, condition and technical documents. A statement that “this model has been imported before” should lead to a request for the exact approved configuration and remaining conditions.
Check warranty and service without making a brand-wide assumption
Tesla’s published service-region guidance gives an example in which a North American vehicle can be serviced in Norway while its North American warranty is not valid there. It also describes maintaining the original build specification for repairs.[4] This illustrates why service availability and warranty coverage are separate questions; it is not a warranty rule for every Chinese brand.
For your actual car, request the warranty provider, applicable country, transfer conditions, coverage period, claim process and responsibility for labour, parts and transport. Ask the local service provider which systems it can diagnose and repair and how compatible parts are obtained. Record a written seller commitment separately from manufacturer warranty terms.
Review charging, software and vehicle changes
Use the charging acceptance worksheet to match the installed interface to intended equipment. Record the vehicle’s displayed languages and the connected functions needed by the buyer. Ask which services require a regional account, connectivity or continuing provider support, and obtain evidence for the actual software version.
Where modifications are proposed for an approval route, have the authorized destination provider define the work and the required evidence. Keep the original and final specifications linked. Do not assume an informal steering, lighting or charging alteration is accepted merely because the car can be operated afterward.
Use a decision register before placing the order
- Identify the destination and exact factory vehicle.
- Record the customs and import eligibility decision.
- Identify the vehicle approval route, evidence owner and outstanding conditions.
- Confirm registration requirements and the receiving party.
- Complete the charging, software, service and warranty review.
- Agree the inspection, document and transport scope, then approve purchase and loading according to the completed evidence.
Use confirmed, conditional and outstanding statuses. If the VIN, destination or specification changes, reopen the affected decisions. Keep the authority or provider’s dated response with the final commercial file so that a later handover can be checked against the agreed route.
Request an approval-led vehicle enquiry
Send the model, quantity, country and the local provider’s required evidence list. Auto From China can help coordinate sourcing, inspection and the shipping scope for that specification.
