Concrete-mixer procurement needs a working batch definition. Geometrical drum volume, rated mixing capacity and the concrete actually delivered are different quantities. A buyer should confirm the offered mixer’s specified operating capacity and the completed truck’s mass limits before treating a cubic-metre label as saleable payload.
Buy the permitted working batch
Before you approve the quotation: Request the rated working volume separately from geometrical drum volume. Reconcile actual concrete density, operating equipment and completed axle weights before agreeing the batch; spare drum space is not extra carrying permission.

What the purchasing team needs to resolve
Describe the concrete and dispatch requirements with the producer’s technical team. The mixer manufacturer should confirm the application, loading and operating conditions for its actual drum and drive arrangement. Product-quality and process decisions belong with that team; a vehicle export quotation should not invent a universal mixing or retention procedure.
Include water, tools, equipment and the vehicle’s agreed operating condition in the mass account. Check axle distribution as well as total mass. A drum with spare geometric space cannot authorise additional concrete if the truck, axles or destination limits are already governing. Compare like-for-like working batches and installed systems rather than the largest volume number visible in the brochure.
Make the buying trade-off explicit
| Decision | Alternative A | Alternative B | Buyer’s evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume identity | Total drum geometry | Manufacturer-rated working batch | Exact mixer technical specification |
| Product basis | Generic concrete assumption | Producer-defined mix and operating duty | Technical application brief |
| Mass account | Concrete alone | Complete truck, equipment and batch | Agreed operating condition |
| Drive arrangement | Drum rotates | Confirmed drive and hydraulic duty | Integrated equipment documentation |
| Acceptance | Visual drum size | Specified working-system evidence | Competent agreed test and records |
A worked buying example
Illustrative assumptions; not a supplier quotation, an approved design or a machine rating.
At an assumed concrete density of 2,400 kg/m³, a 6 m³ batch weighs 14,400 kg. A 7 m³ batch weighs 16,800 kg, adding 2,400 kg. Those assumptions are not a mix specification or permission to carry either batch. Use the actual material density and the manufacturer’s working capacity, then verify total, axle and local transport limits for the completed truck.
What to freeze before manufacture
Ask the supplier to identify the rated working volume separately from the drum’s geometrical volume. Attach the producer’s duty and equipment requirements to the order, with a completed mass and axle calculation. At acceptance, reconcile the actual drum, drive system and vehicle configuration with those records. The useful buying number is the batch the approved completed vehicle can operate and transport under the agreed conditions.
Questions to send with the enquiry
- Which quoted volume is geometry and which is rated working capacity?
- What concrete and dispatch duty has the producer specified?
- What mass and axle limits govern the completed truck?
- What integrated drive and acceptance evidence will the supplier provide?
Send Auto From China your enquiry, including your destination, operating brief and the answers above. We can work with manufacturers to compare the relevant vehicle or machinery configuration and identify the items that still need written confirmation.
