Buying a Used EV for Kenya: The Battery File Behind the SOH Number

A used EV advertised with “90% battery health” may look reassuring, but the number is only useful when its origin and meaning are documented. Was it read from the vehicle’s battery-management system, estimated through a test or copied from a seller’s stock sheet? Does it relate to the allocated VIN?

For a Kenyan importer, battery assessment and import compliance should be treated as two connected files. One helps assess purchase condition and operating suitability. The other establishes whether the vehicle meets the applicable admission and inspection requirements. Neither should be assumed to replace the other.

Establish import eligibility separately

KRA’s vehicle import procedure describes the RHD, age and roadworthiness framework. KEBS guidance explains different inspection arrangements for used vehicles depending on the exporting country.

Obtain current requirements for the intended entry year and route. If a seller cites a specific minimum battery SOH as a Kenyan regulatory threshold, request the current official notice or applicable standard and confirmation of its scope. The official public material reviewed for this article does not establish a universal 80% threshold for every proposed used-EV import. Do not promote that figure as verified law.

The buyer can agree a contractual battery acceptance condition, but that is a separate procurement requirement. It must also identify the test method and remedy if the car fails.

Ask for a report that can be traced to the car

Report field Required explanation Purchase question
VIN, date and odometer Identity at the time of assessment Is this the allocated vehicle?
Tool and method BMS reading, diagnostic estimate or capacity test What does the displayed SOH measure?
Battery specification Original pack type and relevant capacity basis Is the comparison made against the correct variant?
SOC and temperature conditions Conditions relevant to the procedure Are results comparable to the agreed method?
Fault and repair history Available diagnostic and service evidence Has a concern been investigated or only cleared?
Pack replacement evidence Part identity and repair record where applicable Does the current pack match the documented vehicle?

An SOH figure is not a guarantee of future range, fault-free operation or remaining warranty. Nor does a clean dashboard establish that the underside or battery housing has never been damaged.

Separate usable energy from real operating range

Suppose a hypothetical used car has 45 kWh of usable energy under the agreed assessment conditions. If the planned operation uses an assumed 0.18 kWh/km, dividing 45 by 0.18 gives 250 km before reserve and other constraints. At 0.23 kWh/km, the same arithmetic gives about 196 km.

These assumptions are not measured Kenya results and do not describe any particular model. They show why a battery report and a route-consumption assumption are different inputs. Temperature, air conditioning, speed, load and charging availability can alter the operating decision.

Define the intended daily distance and minimum arrival reserve before accepting the vehicle. A car can have an attractive SOH percentage and still be unsuitable for a long shift with limited charging.

Inspect the vehicle around the battery

A qualified inspector should assess accessible underbody condition, signs of impact or repair, charging-port condition, warning history and the relevant diagnostic information. High-voltage testing or repair belongs to trained personnel using the manufacturer’s process; the buyer should not request unsafe improvised tests.

Include an ordinary charging check on documented compatible equipment. For DC charging, capture the equipment identity, SOC window and any interruptions. A short successful session establishes that session’s result, not universal compatibility or full charging performance.

Review recalls against the VIN and seek completion evidence for applicable remedies. A query saying the car falls within a recall population is not proof that the repair has been carried out.

Agree the acceptance conditions before inspection

The order should state the accepted report method, material fault conditions, damage exclusions and what happens if the allocated car fails. Specify whether the seller substitutes a vehicle, repairs an issue with approval or returns payment according to the contract.

For a small fleet, use the same assessment format across the proposed cars. A collection of unrelated screenshots makes meaningful comparison difficult, even when every screenshot displays a high percentage.
